High Seas: Rags2Riches S/S 2014 Collection VIP Launch

When I received an invitation to cover the launching of Rags2Riches' 2014 spring/summer collection, from their president and co-founder, Reese Fernandez, I didn't really know much about the brand. I didn't want to show up at the event unprepared so I did some research.

Not only was I impressed by the beautiful designs of their bags, but there is an inspiring story behind this successful bag enterprise.

It's a story about women-empowerment since the bags are made from materials woven by women from Payatas, the Philippines' biggest garbage dumpsite. Once just sold as foot rugs from which the women earned a measly one to two pesos per piece, they were fashioned into beautiful accessories by no less than the likes of topnotch Filipino designer Rajo Laurel. They became an instant hit among Manila's gliteratti. Today, the Payatas women have a burgeoning livelihood from a profit-sharing scheme with Rags2Riches which finances and administers the production, marketing, and promotion of the bags. In the meantime, the lives of these women have changed forever. How inspiring is that?

After seven years in business, Rags2Riches just launched their spring/summer collection called "High Seas" at the Privato Hotel last Saturday, March 22.

The next time you purchase a RIIR bag, remember that you are helping make dreams for a better life come true. While looking fashionable at the same time, too!

With President and Co-founder, Reese Fernandez

RIIRiches also collaborated with model and host, KellyMisa, in designing a couple of their bags.
