Welcome the Year of the Sheep

Filipinos love celebrations! We are a country of festivals and fiestas both religious and cultural in origin. It is said that there is at least one festival held in one town or another in the Philippines every week of the year! For Filipinos everywhere it is a chance to get together with one's family, friends, and community over food and drink and merrymaking.

So it should come as no surprise that we actually celebrate New Year twice a year, with a national holiday no less!

The first, of course, is celebrated with the rest of the world on January 1 of the Gregorian Calendar.

The second is on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar, which happens to fall on February 19 this year.

As tradition calls for, the occasion is greeted by  fireworks at the stroke of midnight, families especially those of Fil-Chinese descent get together over a sumptuous feast of pancit (noodles) for longevity, tikoy (sweet rice cake) for good luck and strong family bonds, vegetable dimsum for prosperity, and spring rolls also for good fortune and prosperity.

And, of course, the tradition of wearing specific colors in order to attract luck and success is a global practice.

I love this dress from Prada because it combines some of the traditional lucky colors for the Year of the Sheep.

  11. This is my first year celebrating CNY away from my family and it certainly feels different. We live in a small town in Canada and the Chinese population is not as large so it's been really quiet.
Your dress is really lovely, very CNY appropriate!
