Yanagi Restaurant at the Midas Hotel for Classic & Original Japanese Fare

It's no secret that Girl About Town is a team of big foodies and proudly so - in fact, our very own Nicco Recasata is an aspiring chef. So, in between fashion and beauty events and photo shoots and travel reviews, we are more than thrilled to oblige invites to food tasting events. Just last week, we had the pleasure of having been invited to dine at Midas Hotel and Casino's flagship restaurant - the Yanagi Japanese Restaurant!

Our lunch menu, which was laid for our appreciation on the side of our plates, was carefully curated and prepared by the restaurant's amiable head chef, Chester Lucas, a Filipino whom we are told trained in Japan and worked many years under the wings of many seasoned Japanese chefs. In the menu was five of Yanagi's signature specialties: Aburi Sushi, Tempura Maki, Kaki Papaya Yaki, Suziki Foil Yaki, and the Suzuki Miso Yaki and three of the restaurant's newest creations: The Suimono, Maguro Peppered Steak, and the Gyunabe Zen.

Apart from being excited to try the food, we also wanted to judge what exactly set Yanagi apart from all the Japanese restaurants all over the country. Well, let me just say, you'll probably end reading this post with your tummies grumbling! So without further ado, let's start talking food!

Here are the amazing specialty Yanagi dishes:

Aburi Sushi (PHP610): "Slightly burnt sushi tuna, salmon, eel, hamachi, and lapu-lapu"

 Definitely the royalties of the sea done justice in one tasty, flavorful dish! My personal favorites? Without a doubt, the salmon and eel sushi!

Tempura Maki (PHP600): "Thick maki roll with prawn tempura"

There's not much you can do to make me love maki more than I already do- except make it super crunchy and add delicious aburi sauce, which is exactly what they did!


Kaki Papaya Yaki (PHP500): "Grilled Japanese oyster in papaya miso sauce"

 To be honest, I was a bit apprehensive about this one upon seeing it in thmenu. Papaya and oyster? Seriously? But yes, it was SERIOUSLY delicious! The sweetness of the papaya just worked so well with the rich salty taste of oyster. And to top it with creamy miso mayo sauce was pure perfection! 
It was actually a personal favorite of Nicco and I!

Suzuki Foil Yaki (PHP850): "Seabass and vegetables wrapped in aluminum foil"

A light and moist dish! It's steamed so it's every health buff's dream!

Suzuki Miso Yaki (PHP900): "Grilled seabass with miso paste"

Now, this dish took seabass to a whole new level! It was so rich, creamy, and melt-in-your mouth that I couldn't help but gush over every single bite! 
Definitely a must-try, not-to-be-missed dish if you arever in Yanagi!

Suimono (PHP195): "Japanese clear soup"

Hearty and flavorful! 

Maguro Pepper Steak (PHP520): "Fresh tuna with black pepper steak"

This dish is one of the best ways to have tuna - seared on each side, raw in the middle, perfectly seasoned, and topped with garlic!

Gyunabe Zen (PHP785): "Starter, three kinds of appetizers, salad, sukiyaki, plain rice, miso soup, pickles, and dessert"

Now, this is a set menu that will surely satisfy your Japanese craving! I personally enjoyed the appetizers especially the deep-fried uni and the big, hearty serving of sukiyaki!

Black Sesame, Red Bean, Green Tea, and Wasabi Ice Cream boat

Your favorite Japanese flavors incorporated into ice cream! My favorites were the green tea and red bean. It was definitely a unique sweet ending to an amazing lunch! 

The ambiance:

Yanagi is definitely a restaurant every Japanese foodie would love to visit with their families, friends, and especially their special someone! Yanagi definitely does not come short of high-quality, perfectly curated, authentic Japanese dishes. You'll also love the homey, easy ambiance of this restaurant.
I didn't realize we spent nearly three hours chatting and enjoying sumptuous food and great company.
