My Weekend with Pumpkin at Joy Nostalg Hotel & Suites Manila

In my book, the best staycations are those spent with family - and ours happens to include a six-year old Shih Tzu - Poodle, fondly called Pumpkin, who is loved and cared for like every other member of our small brood of four.

So, naturally, I have the biggest appreciation for pet-friendly establishments, especially those that don't just allow pets but actually go out of their way to ensure our furry, four-legged companions feel as warmly welcome and comfortable as we ourselves do.

And that's exactly how Pumpkin and I felt when we spent a weekend early this month at the JOY NOSTALG HOTEL & SUITES, a luxury five-star hotel located at the heart of Ortigas Center in Pasig, Metro Manila.

From the quick, hassle-free check in to the thoughtful touches we found waiting for us in our suite to every warm if brief encounter we had with hotel staff - the same message was delivered loud and clear:  "We're happy you're here. We're going to make sure you have a wonderful stay."

It wasn't our first time at Joy Nostalg - but while admittedly, the first thing that drew us to the place was that it is pet-friendly, we soon discovered many other delightful reasons to keep coming back.

It's almost cliché to say this of hotel personnel, but the people of Joy Nostalg truly are warm, friendly, and solicitous - and I've seen them at work during the Christmas holidays, the busiest time of the year in the hotel industry. That they managed to impress even during this time says a lot about their brand of service.  So on less busy days like those on our latest stay, I felt the sincerity when someone at the front desk chimed, "Welcome back!" or when the chef said, "Enjoy your breakfast!"

I also love their attention to detail, the thoughtful little things they put in to make their guests feel at home like that fluffy dog bed and tug toy they placed in the room for Pumpkin, or the extra TV by the bathtub that my mom so puts to good use every time we are here - the better to keep up with the Kardashians - her favorite show! In the one-bedroom suite in which we always stay, that TV is the smaller one of three - there is a 40-inch high definition TV in the living area and another in the bedroom - so, even when you're with family, there is never, ever any need to fight over the remote control.

Compared to other serviced apartments/hotels I've featured on the blog, the suites at Joy Nostalg are R-O-O-M-Y! Each suite has a spacious living area where one can entertain, or lounge about on the big, comfortable couch. Me? I loved curling up with a book on the duvet by the floor-to-ceiling window while pumpkin snoozed beside me. The bedroom itself is huge with a soft king-sized bed, pillows so huge and fluffy and linens so luxurious, I was tempted to stay in bed my entire stay. Though it might be difficult to pass up any opportunity to dine at the hotel's beautiful restaurant on the sixth floor. Called Nostalgia, its classic old world elegance and cozy romantic ambience is just the perfect setting to enjoy an array of local favorites mixed with choice Asian and continental dishes. But if eating in privacy is more your thing, there's a fully equipped kitchen right at the confines of your own suite or you can always room service, available 24/7.

For the more active and fitness-conscious among us, there's a fully equipped gym in the hotel so you needn't worry about missing a workout.  There is also an indoor swimming pool on the sixth floor down the hall from the Nostalgia Lounge but if you want it all to yourself I suggest you go early at 8 a.m. when they open as it gets pretty packed the rest of the day.

One of the best things about Joy Nostalg Hotel & Suites is that it has joined an elite group - the Accor Hotels, one of the world's leading multinational hotel groups that owns, operates, and franchises over 4,300 hotels across the globe. It is now spearheaded by new General Manager Shane Edwards, who brings with him 10 solid years of experience with Accor. His tour of duty has brought him to Australia, the United States, and Vietnam before taking on his current role as Joy Nostalg general manager.

As a proud member of Le Club, AccorHotels loyalty and membership program, I expect Joy Nostalg's already superb brand of service to get even better with the Accor stamp of quality now attached to its name.

So next time you're on the hunt for a good place around the Metro to chill with your beloved dog or cat, I'd highly recommend staying at the Joy Nostalg. Make sure to let them know when you make your booking that you are bringing along a pet. A Php2,000 security deposit fee (refundable) will be required upon check in plus a minimal cleaning fee (based on room type) will be charged as follows:

·         Studio Executive - Php1,000
·         One Bedroom Executive Suite - Php1,500
